The Stags baseball team opened SCIAC conference play with three games in two days verses Redlands. In the first game, the Stags defeated the Bulldogs 13-8 at home. On Saturday, the Stags traveled to Redlands for a double-header and were defeated in both games (7-1, 8-6).
On Friday, with the score tied 4-4, the Stags turned on the bats in the 5th inning by scoring three runs in the 5th, a run in the 6th, and four runs in the 7th. Alex Sunderland (JR, Littleton, CO), the winning pitcher, pitched six innings with six hits, six strikeouts and four runs against 21 batters. Steve Dannaway (SR, Honolulu, HI) hit three for five with two doubles and four RBIs. Matt Moyer (SR, Oakland) also went three for five with one RBI and three runs scored. David Spiller (SR, Sacramento) went two for four with a walk and two runs scored.
On Saturday, the Stags started slow by losing the first of their double-header 7-1. David Ulrich (SO, Summit, NJ) started the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and 12 hits. Kyle Shipley (SO, Albany) was able to stop the bleeding, allowing only one hit against eight batters, but the Stags had trouble getting men on base, having only seven hits as a team.
Their second game looked to be in the Stags' favor, as they jumped to a 4-3 lead at the end of seven innings. After a two-run 8th inning by the Bulldogs, the Stags answered with two runs of their own in the top of the 9th inning. The Stags were up 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth, but the Bulldogs sealed the deal with a walk-off three-run homerun. Steve Dannaway was two for five and led the team with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Stags will be at home for the next two games as they play Chapman on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 and Caltech on Friday, February 19, 2010. The first pitch for both games is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
