CLAREMONT, CA -- Captain Stephanos Stroop (SR, Nashville, TN [pictured]) hit a three-run double to tie the game at 3-3, but a disastrous nine-run 5th inning gave Chapman (4-1) the win by a score of 12-3. The Stags (1-4, 1-2 SCIAC) were up against a high-caliber team in the Panthers, as Chapman was ranked #7 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason polls, which included one 1st place vote.
Pitcher Alex Sunderland (JR, Littleton, CO) had a slow start, giving up two home runs in the first inning to give the Panthers the early lead. The Stags were able to dig themselves out of the early three-run hole with a three-run double to right-center by DH Stephanos Stroop. But the Panthers' nine unanswered runs in the 5th inning proved to be too large of a deficit to overcome. The Stags allowed 12 runs on 16 hits, which was large in comparison to the Stag's six hits.
CMS will play their next series of games against SCIAC conference foe Caltech. The Stags will host on Friday, Feb. 19 at 2:30 PM. On Saturday, Feb, 19 the Stags will travel to Caltech where the games are scheduled for 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
