Leopards Shock Stags, Complete Three-Game Sweep

CLAREMONT, CA -- CMS was unable to continue their two-series winning streak by losing a three-game series to La Verne (15-1, 8-2, and 13-4). The Stags have won four of their last six SCIAC contests and were in a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC heading into the weekend series with La Verne.

Alex Sunderland (JR, Littleton, CO) pitched 6 1/3 innings with 11 hits and eight earned runs in the game on Friday. The Stags were unable to match La Verne’s success at the plate, scoring one run on eight hits compared to La Verne’s 15 runs on 16 hits. The Leopards put the game out of reach in the seventh inning by scoring seven unanswered runs. Matt Rose (SR, Shell Beach) scored the lone run for the stags in the Sixth inning and was 1-4 on the day.

In the double-header on Saturday, the Stags’ looked promising in the first game. RBI’s by Max Rose and Steve Dannaway (SR, Honolulu, HI) put the Stags up 2-1 in by the end of the third inning; but the Leopards scored seven unanswered runs and defeated the Stags 8-2. David Ulrich (SO, Summit, NJ [pictured]) pitched a solid game by allowing only five hits and three earned runs in his seven innings of work. Dannaway was 2-4 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Stags were in a 4-0 deficit by the end of four innings, but were able to storm back with a run in the fifth and sixth inning and two runs in the eight innings to close the gap to one run. Despite their efforts, La Verne had a monstrous eight-run inning in the ninth to increase their lead 13-4, which was too large for the Stags to overcome.

The Stags are currently three games out of the fourth spot in the SCIAC standings with seven games to play. Baseball will finish out the season with single-game series instead of three-game series. Their next game will be Friday, April 16 at home against Cal Tech. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
