CMS Wins Tournament Final After Epic Semi Win

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the inaugural SCIAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 victory over host University of Redlands on Saturday night and earned the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. CMS, seeded third, prevailed over second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer 15-14 in a penalty kick shootout on Friday night to advance to the final. CMS is now 10-7-3 while top-seeded Redlands dropped to 13-4-1.

Redlands dominated the first half of the final as they outshot CMS 9-0 and scored in the 10th minute. The Athenas bounced back and outshot the Bulldogs 8-7 in the second frame. They tied the game eight minutes into the half as Nicole Esclamado (SR, Napa) headed in a Brittney Watson (SO, Sammamish, WA) corner for her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Megan Kum (JR, South Pasadena) scored the game-winner 10 minutes later as she lofted a shot over the keeper's head. Both keepers made two saves and both teams hit the cross bar in the final 28 minutes, but there was no more scoring.

In Friday's semifinal, CMS scored first as Ashley Green (SO, Seattle, WA) headed in a pass from Erin Chamberlain (SO, Medford, OR) in the 11th minute. Pomona-Pitzer tied the game 18 minutes into the second half. The teams battled for the remainder of the half and through two sudden death overtime periods before entering the shootout with a 1-1 tie. Pomona-Pitzer shot first and both teams converted four tries and made one save in regulation to advance to a sudden death shootout. Both teams missed on their sixth try and converted on their seventh and eighth. Pomona-Pitzer missed on their ninth try, but CMS hit the post. The teams converted eight straight tries each before Pomona-Pitzer again missed in the 18th round. Esclamado converted her shot to propel CMS to the final.

CMS advances to the NCAA Championships for the second time. In 2002, CMS also won a shootout (somewhat shorter at 5-4) to secure the SCIAC's automatic bid for that season. The entire NCAA Championship field will be announced on ncaasports.com on Monday, November 6, 2006 between 8-10 a.m. ET.
