Athenas Fall To Pioneers In Another One Goal Game

The Athenas stepped onto the field ready and willing to play against Cal State East Bay on Friday night, yet fell short of the win. The Pioneers took the 2-1 victory, propelling them into a 2-0-1 record for the season, while the CMS Athenas hold a 1-3 record overall. All four games for CMS have been decided by one goal.
The Athenas came out on fire in the first ten minutes of the game, maintaining possession and getting a goal right off the bat with goal scored by center midfielder Sarah Blavet (JR, Austin, TX) off an assist from forward Megan Kum (SR, South Pasadena). The tide turned quickly, however, and Cal State East Bay pressured the Athenas heavily and were able to get a shot off inside the six and score with plenty of time until the half. Both teams were able to stave off further scoring opportunities.
As the whistle blew to start the second half, the now anxious and energized Athenas fought hard to get back the lead. Both teams played to win, looking for the opportunity to find the back of the net. Halfway through, Cal State shot an great ball nearly twenty-five yards outside of the box, and found the upper corner of the goal to gain a 2-1 lead which held for the remaining minutes of the game.
The Athenas will play UC Santa Cruz this Sunday (September 9th) at noon for their final pre-season game.
