Cal Lutheran Defeats CMS In SCIAC Tournament Semis

Fourth-seeded Cal Lutheran beat top-seeded CMS 2-0 in the semifinals of the SCIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Thursday evening.  The teams were battling for a spot in the final, a game in which the winner earns the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.

The Athenas defeated the Regals in the first round of the season 1-0 and lost their second round against the opponents 2-1. With a win-or-go-home pressure, both teams stepped onto the field Thursday night with intensity. However, to the disappointment of the home crowd, Cal Lu beat CMS 2-0.

Halfway through the first half, a foul was drawn on Cal Lutheran outside of the 18-yard line and Cal Lu ripped a hard shot into the upper corner of the CMS goal for a 1-0 lead. The Athenas fought back the rest of the half, gaining some opportunities on offense yet there was no further scoring. Cal Lu scored again partway through the second half on a rocket placed in the upper V to set the score to 2-0. The Athenas fought hard to come back but to no avail. CMS ended the regular season at 13-6 and hope to earn an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament.  The tournament selections will be announced on Sunday evening.

Cal Lu will meet Occidental in the SCIAC Tournament Final this Saturday at Occidental.
