Athenas Earn Win To Finish St. Louis Trip

The Athenas (2-1) played Webster College (1-1) from St. Louis, MO in their second game of the Washington University Classic. Coming off a hard-fought match against nationally ranked Washington University the night before, the Athenas were caught off guard early in the game and went down one goal. Despite this early setback, the Athenas pulled off an impressive come from behind win, with a final score of 4-2. Annie Belanger (FR, Oakland) scored her first collegiate goal off a set play to start the Athenas' comeback. Several minutes before the half ended, Olivia Sylvester (FR, Seattle, WA) beat her player on the right side, cut into the field towards the goal and played a lethal pass to teammate Julia Raney (Fr, Belvedere) who one-timed it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal as well. In the second half the Athenas extended their lead when Laura Hagen (Jr, Bellvue, WA) received a ball from Belanger, turned and burned her defender and hit a ball to the far post to beat the keeper for her second goal of the season. Webster College sealed the deal for CMS, scoring an own goal and putting the Athenas up 4-1. A breakaway lead to Webster's second goal, ending the match with a CMS victory of 4-2. The Athenas will travel to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday afternoon for their first SCIAC game of the 2009 season.
