Athenas Fall To The Panthers
After finishing the first round of SCIAC play in first place,
the Athenas lost 2-1 to the Division III Chapman Panthers.
Coming off of two games in which the Athenas had trouble scoring
and connecting as a team, the Athenas were hoping to get their
groove back. However, despite some good plays and good possession
the Athenas came out flat and in the 22nd minute the Panthers were
able to head a ball past keeper Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (SR, Santa
Fe, NM).
The Athenas came out stronger in the second half and controlled
play. Unfortunately, the Panthers got a quick counter and, on a
similar play, headed the ball over Friedman-Gerlicz who came off
her line to try and make the save. Once the Athenas were down 2-0
they stepped up their game even more and dominated the remainder of
the game. Laura Hagen (JR, Bellevue, WA) scored a beautiful goal
from far out that she lofted just out of reach of the Panther
keeper. With 25 minutes remaining the Athenas battled hard, getting
shots off, but were unable to score despite hitting the post twice
as well as the crossbar.
Despite the loss, the Athenas are ready and excited for the second
round of SCIAC play. Their next game is home on Pritzlaff Field on
Saturday night at 7:00 pm against Cal Lutheran.
