Athenas Shutout Cross Street Rivals

On Saturday, during the start of Fall Break, the Athenas (8-2-2, 6-0-2 SCIAC) played the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (3-9-1, 2-5-1 SCIAC) at Pomona in their second round of league play. It was Senior Day for the five Pomona-Pitzer seniors, but the Athenas came out on top 3-0. The Athenas came out strong and were able to put one away within the first five minutes of play. Laura Hagen (JR, Bellevue, WA) took on one of their central defenders and fired a shot that was deflected by the defender to Julia Nishioka (SO, Honolulu, HI) who slipped the ball right past the keeper. About ten minutes later sweeper Chrysanthia Cheung-Lau (JR, Upland, CA) chipped a floating ball over the Sagehen defense that managed to get a touch on the ball. Arlyn Madsen-Bond (JR, Cambridge, MA) headed the ball off their mis-clearance to Brittany Pineros (JR, Mukilteo, WA [pictured]) who placed the ball in the corner of the goal to put the Athenas up 2-0. A few minutes later, Pineros again ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal after the keeper made a save off a shot by Lizzie Van Buskirk (JR, San Rafael, CA). Pomona had a few threatening opportunities. One in which, Rosa Ahn (SO, Cupertino, CA) managed to block a clear goal from one of the Sagehen forwards after being left two v. one in the back. CMS continued to play beautiful one and two touch possession throughout the rest of the first and second halves.

CMS will host Redlands on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 with first place in SCIAC on the line.
