CMS Shuts Out Whittier To Maintain First Place

On Saturday, October 24, Athenas Soccer (10-2-2, 8-0-2 SCIAC) defeated the Whittier Poets 6-0.   After a disappointing tie to the Poets at Whittier earlier in the season, the Athenas knew that they needed to increase the speed of play and spread the field.  Carolyn Campbell (JR, Irvine) started the scoring earlier, finishing a great cross from Olivia Sylvester (FR, Seattle, WA [pictured]) in the third minute of play.  Sylvester then put two balls in the back of the net herself to increase the lead to 3-0.

Despite dominating play, CMS knew that Whittier would continue to play hard.   Laura Hagen (JR, Bellevue, WA) scored the first goal of the second half, with Kirsten McAfee (JR, Albuquerque, NM) and Brittany Pineros (JR, Mukilteo, WA) putting away the final two.   Even though the Poets battled until the final whistle, the Athenas held the Poets to only one shot in the game.

CMS will play at Occidental on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.  Their next home game is Friday, October 30 against UC Santa Cruz at 7:00 pm.
