Stags Beat Loggers To Go 2-0

CMS beat University of Puget Sound for the first time in six meetings on Saturday. The 14-6 win improved the team's record to 2-0 for the first time since 2002.  The Stag defense stifled the Loggers all game giving up only 163 yards and one touchdown.  A combined 269 yards rushing by quarterback Scott Yingling (JR, Chicago, IL [pictured right]) and running back DJ Lillard (SR, Phoenix, AZ [pictured left]) lifted the Stags to the victory.  The offense moved the ball effectively on the ground amassing 301 yards rushing.  The team improved to 11th in the nation in rushing yards per game (272.0).  The Stags scored first on a 24 yard TD run by Yingling.  Puget Sound scored early in the second quarter, but the Stags blocked the extra point preserving a 7-6 lead.  Lillard would punch one in from three yards out in the second quarter giving the Stags a 14-6 lead.  That was all the defense needed as they didn't let Puget Sound anywhere near the endzone in the second half.  The defense's dominating performance was capped off by a devastating hit by Landon Patoc (SR, DB, Honolulu, HI) and a sack by Eddie Mills (DL, SO, Bellevue, WA) on the Loggers' final possession.  Players of the game were Kaj Pedersen (OL, JR, Santa Ana) on offense, Eddie Mills on defense, and Ryan Pedersen (OL, JR, Petaluma) on special teams.

The Stags now prepare for a showdown with Occidental, the defending conference champions, on Saturday, October 3rd at 1:00 PM at Zinda Field.
