Five CMS Football Players Named To 2012 SCIAC All-Academic Team
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released its annual All-Academic football team on Friday, Feb. 15 and five Claremont-Mudd-Scripps student-athletes have been selected. A pair of seniors in linebacker Jackie Coburn and quarterback Peter Kimmey along with a trio of sophomores in defensive back Michael Connell, defensive back Phil Crawford and offensive lineman Sam Perrella all earned the award.
Coburn, a Biology major, led the team in sacks (4), forced fumbles (2) and tackles for loss (8). He also finished second on the team in tackles (60) despite playing in just seven of the team's nine games. In November Coburn was also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team for his efforts on the field and in the classroom.
Kimmey, an Economics major, started eight games for the Stags under center and threw for 1,028 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 285 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Both Coburn and Kimmey earned the award in 2011 as well.
Connell, an Economics major, played in seven games in 2012 and totaled 17 tackles and two tackles for loss. Crawford, also an Economics major, played in all nine games and had 28 tackles and two pass breakups while Perrella, a Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) major started all nine games on the line.
The SCIAC All-Academic teams are made up of student-athletes who have at least a 3.40 cumulative grade-point average at his/her current institution, must have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution, and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility. In the case of transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution.
The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
