Late Run Propels Stags To Win Over Poets

CMS used a 22-9 run over the last five minutes to erase a five point deficit and beat Whittier 73-65 on Wednesday night.  The Stags improved to 11-7 and 7-1 (1st) in SCIAC while the Poets fell to 9-10 and 4-4.

The game remained close throughout the first half, although CMS had the upper hand at the end as they led 40-34 at the halftime buzzer. No team gained a large lead throughout the entirety of the half, and the differential was largely due to a couple of key threes from guard Remy Pinson (FR, Rye, NY).

Joey Anderson (JR, Lafayette [pictured]) opened the second half with some crucial offensive and defensive rebounds. He ended the game with a double-double (12 rebounds, 12 points) and had some clutch free throws to clinch the Stags' win.

The second half was largely back and forth until forward Kevin Sullivan (SO, Beaverton, OR) hit three 3-pointers on three consecutive shots to help the Stags pull away in the final two minutes.

The game remained close however, as Whittier guard Ricky Kamayatsu hit a 3-pointer from the corner with under a minute left to make it a two point game. CMS made their free throws late, however, and that, combined with some Whittier mistakes on their final possessions, allowed CMS to triumph.

This was an important bounce back game for the Stags after Redlands snapped their eight-game win streak last Saturday night.  Redlands lost to Occidental, who the Stags will travel to play on Saturday, on Wednesday to leave the Stags alone in first.  CMS opened SCIAC play with a 57-50 home win over Occidental on January 8.
