Stags Tame Leopards Behind Early Run

LA VERNE, CA – The #12 Stags came out scorching on the road Wednesday night, taking an 18-0 lead and never looking back against conference foe La Verne. CMS lead the whole way, and after taking the big early lead, the Leopards could never cut their deficit to single digits, coming only as close as 14 to start the second half--but never closer.

Chris Blees put together 10 of the Stags first 16 points and finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds. The 25 point effort marked the third 20+ point game of Blees' season. Tyler Gaffaney and Mani Maceira also put up double-digit scoring efforts with 15 each and shot efficiently as well, posting 7-of-9 and 6-of-7 shooting efforts respectively. As a team, the Stags shot a staggering 64.8% from the floor, which included a first half shooting clip of nearly 75%. They played smart, mistake-free basketball most of the night as well, coughing up only six turnovers next to 12 assists.

Three Leopards scored in double-digits in the home loss, led by Senior forward Austin Napolitano with a team-high 13. The conference's leading scorer, guard Trevor Woodland was held to just seven points on 3-of-8 shooting.

Next up, CMS (18-1, 7-1 SCIAC) hosts the Whittier Poets (14-5, 6-2 SCIAC) Saturday night, the only team to have beaten the Stags this season. That game will tip at 7:00 pm.  The Leopards (5-14, 2-6 SCIAC) look to avoid a three-game skid on the road Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
