CLAREMONT, Calif. – Behind eight three-pointers by senior guard Remy Pinson and 28 points from senior guard Tyler Gaffaney, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team cruised to an 87-67 SCIAC win over Whittier on Saturday evening at Ducey Gym. With the win, CMS improved to 14-4 overall and 9-0 in SCIAC which puts them in first place. CMS has now won nine games in row overall.
CMS opened up a double-digit lead with 15:17 left in the first half on back-to-back three-pointers by Gaffaney and Pinson to go ahead 15-5. After a brief tie just two minutes into the game, CMS led for the final 38 minutes of the contest.
Pinson has enjoyed playing on Saturdays recently. Over the last two Saturday games, the senior had 30 points –including nine three-pointers– at Redlands on Jan. 25 and 26 points with eight threes against Whittier.
As a team, CMS shot 11-of-26 from outside the arc against Whittier. Junior guard Jack Grodahl added nine points and five rebounds with two three-pointers.
Second chance points and rebounding proved to be key for CMS in the win. The Stags out-rebounded the Poets 36-24 and had 15 second chance points. CMS also had 20 points off turnovers.
Whittier (10-8, 4-5) had three players in double-figure scoring led by Chris Barnes-William who had 15 off the bench.
Next up for CMS is a home game vs. Occidental (Feb. 5) and a road game at Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 8).
