Fifth Place Finish at Point Loma Propels Stags to Seventh in the Nation
The CMS golf team made their inaugural visit to the Point Loma
Nazarene University Smee Builders Invitational hosted at Steele
Canyon Golf Club, finishing in fifth with a three round total of
899. After shooting a disappointing 308 in the first round and
sitting in 11th out of 15, the Stags rallied in the afternoon of
the 36 hole day to shoot 292. The two round total of 600 put the
Stags in a tie for fifth with Wayland Baptist University, just two
strokes behind fourth place Cal State East Bay at 598.
On day two, the Stags played steady enough to hold on to fifth in
tough conditions. The Stags were led by a ninth place finish from
Tain Lee (FR, San Juan Capistrano), who shot rounds of 76, 72, 71
on the par 71 course to finish at +6. Co-Captain Kyle Casella (JR,
Tiburon) shot rounds of 79, 72, 76 to share 21st place. Co-Captain
Jon Morris (JR, Santa Rosa) and Michael Liu tied for 32nd with
respective three-day total of 82, 71, 77 and 78, 77, 75. Jay
Tymkovich (FR, Broomfield, CO) shot 75, 77, 80 to finish in a tie
for 36th place.
With another strong finish, the Stags improved on their debut 10th
place national ranking, jumping two teams to move to seventh in the
Golfstat national ranking for Division III. The Stags are back in
action on Monday, March 9 for SCIAC #2 at Goose Creek Golf Club.
