Stags Battle Field, Weather in Season Opener at Chico
The CMS golf team began its fall season in a rain-shortened
Wildcat Classic hosted at Butte Creek C.C. in Chico, CA. Up
against an unfamiliar course and a tough Division II field
headlined by the 2009 National Champion Sonoma State Seawolves, the
Stags fell to a disappointing 14th place finish with a
two round total of 637. Sophomore Tain Lee led the way for
the Stags, carding solid rounds of 75-73 for a 148 total that tied
him for 12th place individually.
Senior Co-Captain John Morris rebounded nicely from a rough early
going to shoot rounds of 78-75 for a 153 total and a tie for
35th. Chico State University beat out Holy Names University
for the team title in a playoff.
The Stags, ranked 14th nationally in the Golf World/Nike Men's Division III Coaches' Preseason Poll, will look to rebound next week when they host the second annual CMS Coed Invitational at Los Serranos C.C. History is on their side as they strolled to a 51 shot victory in the inaugural event last season, propelled by a 1-2-3 finish by Morris, sophomore Michael Liu, and Lee respectively.
