Tain Lee won two match-play rounds in the 100th Annual California State Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco before losing in the quaterfinals to the eventual champion.
Lee advanced to match play after finishing in a tie for 16th after 36 holes of stroke play. He shot rounds of 70 and 73 for a 1-over total of 143. Lee was seeded 20th in the match play bracket and faced 13th seed Derek Ernst in the round of 32 on Wednesday. The match was all square after 12 holes, but Lee won three of the final five holes to win 3 & 1. In the round of 16 on Thursday, Lee faced fourth seed Xander Schauffle and went 2-down after the opening nine. He rallied on the back nine winning four of the final eight holes to win 2 & 1. In the quarterfinals Lee lost 4 & 3 to the eventual champion, Bhavik Patel.
Lee, the 2010 NCAA Division III Champion and 2011 Division III Runner-Up, was one of four collegiate players to reach the quarterfinals.
