Stags Down Sagehens, Regain Golden Boot

The men's soccer team won at Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon to sweep the season series.  With a 2-0 record the Stags regained the Golden Boot trophy, symbolic of the top men's soccer team of the Claremont Colleges.  The Stags improved to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC with the victory.

CMS struck first as Griffin Halpern (SR, La Jolla) drilled a free kick from 25 yards out less than 20 minutes into the game.  The Sagehens were able to even the score as they converted a rebound ten minutes later.  Neither team had any more opportunities in the half and the teams went to the break tied at 1.

CMS again struck early in the half for what proved to be the winning goal.  The Pomona-Pitzer keeper came way out of the net in an attempt to clear a long ball, but Toby Stopper (SO, Albuquerque, NM [pictured] was able to beat him to the ball and flick it over him and into the net.  The Stags had the more dangerous opportunities the rest of the half including a shot that hit the post, but neither team was able to score again.  The Stag back line was able to keep the Hens from any quality shots and frustrated them into picking up three yellow cards in the final 30 minutes.

CMS returns to action this Saturday for an 11:00 home game against the University of La Verne.
