CMS Falls At Redlands, Picks Up Three Against Caltech
The men's soccer team struggled to find the back of the net in their 2-0 loss at the University of Redlands on Wednesday, but started off the beginning of the second half of their season with a 3-1 victory over the Beavers of Caltech on Saturday.
The Stags traveled to Farquhar Field on Wednesday to battle the first-place Bulldogs of the University of Redlands under the lights. Both teams were in a stalemate going into the first half as the scores remained 0-0, with the Stags getting the best chance of the half when Mike Nguyentat (SO, Carmichael) narrowly missed the target just minutes before the break. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 57th minute when Alex Parker fought for the ball in the penalty area and was able to beat the CMS defenders and find the goal. The Stags pushed forward late into the game hoping to get the equalizer, but Ross Schunk of Redlands ensured the Bulldogs victory in the 85th minute with a curling shot into the side-netting. CMS was outshot 21-8 by the Bulldogs and was not awarded any corners to the Bulldog's seven.
On Saturday, the Stags began the second half of SCIAC play with a match-up against the Beavers of Caltech. CMS struck first as Max Anawalt (JR, Pasadena) hammered home a cross from the right flank. A few moments later the Beavers equalized with an unstoppable 35-yard volley that dipped into the upper-V of the goal. The Stags were unable to pull ahead before halftime, but Anawalt completed his brace, heading in a cross from a Kevin Festini (SR, Fremont) corner-kick. Tomislav Zbozinek (JR, Paradise Valley, AZ) grabbed his fourth goal of the season, converting a kick from the penalty spot, increasing the lead to 3-1. CMS was able to hang onto this lead and get the victory.
The Stags welcomed the alumni of CMS on Sunday morning and enjoyed a hard-fought contest that ended in a 3-3 tie. They now have a 4-2-2 SCIAC record and sit in second place along with Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne. The CMS men's soccer team will travel to Whittier College on Wednesday to take on the Poets at 4:00 PM.
