Stags Retain Top Spot With Victory Over Leopards
The CMS Men's Soccer Team (11-2-2, 9-1-2 SCIAC), ranked 16th in the nation, defeated the University of La Verne Leopards (4-9-1, 4-7 in SCIAC) by a 1-0 margin on Saturday morning to maintain first place in league play.
The Stags struggled in the early parts of the game and both teams had opportunities to score, but it was CMS who would get on the board late in the first half.
Mitchell Skotarczyk (SR, Brea) launched a beautiful ball to the far post from the right midfield position in the 45th minute. Stefan Gonzalez (GR, San Gabriel) battled in the air and headed the ball back across the face of the goal to an onrushing Sam Ullman (JR, Portland, OR) [pictured] who placed it past the Leopards keeper and into the net on a perfect header.
In the second half, the Leopards pushed forward offensively, looking for the equalizer. CMS was outshot in the game 15-12. ULV's best chances came late in the game but the Stags were able to hang on for their ninth shutout of the season and the victory.
With two games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Stags will take on cross-street rivals Pomona-Pitzer (4-9, 4-6 SCIAC) at Pomona at 4 PM on Wednesday, October 27th. Pomona-Pitzer is fighting for the coveted 4th place position in the SCIAC standings.
