Stags Hold Off Tigers At Home
Entering Saturday's crucial home game in second place following a dramatic 2-1 overtime win at Whitter on Wednesday, the CMS Stags (8-2-2, 6-1-2 in SCIAC) outplayed the Occidental College Tigers in a 1-0 victory, maintaining their place in the standings.
Outshooting their opponent 23-9, the Stags' lone goal of the game came within the first 30 seconds, as midfielder David Taylor (SO, Brookline, MA) buried one from 35 yards out to give CMS an early 1-0 lead. With several opportunities to put more on the board, the Stags defense recorded their sixth shutout of the season, anchored by defender Marshall Fisher (SR, Des Moines, IA) and goalkeeper Joseph Swartley (SR, Monte Sereno).
Sophomore forwards Harrison Doyle (SO, Hidden Hills) and Jared Bernstein (SO, Los Gatos) took a total of 12 shots in the game, keeping the Oxy defense on their heels. With CMS unable to finish a few more opportunities early, Oxy found life as the game progressed, giving the home Stags a run for their money. Tiger Goalie Chris Liotta recorded 12 saves in an impressive performance; however the early goal proved too much for the Tigers to overcome.
Remaining unbeaten on Pritzlaff Field, CMS demonstrated the benefits that would come with catching Redlands in the standings. This was a game Stag Soccer had circled on their calendars, having lost their lone SCIAC game in the closing seconds at Oxy earlier in the season.
The Stags look to maintain their unbeaten record on Pritzlaff Field Monday, October 18th as they host visiting Caltech at 4:00 p.m.
