CLAREMONT, Calif. – After the 3-0 victory over Caltech earlier in the week, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team was handed a 5-1 loss by No. 13 ranked University of Redlands on Saturday night on Pritzlaff Field. Senior Michael Crowley (CMC) led the Stags with four shots while freshman Patrick Burke (CMC) scored CMS' only goal on the night.
The Stags started off with a quick pace and had an opportunity early on as Crowley served in a ball from the right to Mehron Abdi (CMC) whose shot just missed wide right.
Shortly thereafter, the swift Bulldogs scored two quick goals, putting the Stags on their heels. Chase Boone broke through the defense and got a shot off from close range that junior keeper Daniel Cui (CMC) saved but did not hold on to. Boone got his own rebound and passed it into net for Redlands to go up 1-0 in the sixth minute. Two minutes later, Sergio Valencia and Kayvon Parsa connected to put UR two goals ahead in just eight minutes.
The Stags countered with a pair of header shots at the other end by Abdi and Crowley, both missing high. Redlands regained possession and Casey ChubbFertal made a long throw in from the left sideline into the box. All the players in the vicinity went up for it and the ball found its way past Cui for Redlands' third goal of the night.
The rest of the half saw CMS pick up the intensity as senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) and Crowley in the middle distributed a number of passes to freshman Isaiah Alba (CMC) on the left wing. Alba battled down the left side of the field, right in front of Redlands' bench, looking for opportunities to serve it back in.
At halftime, the Stags trailed 3-0. CMS came back from the break eager to make some changes and shots in the upcoming 45 minutes. Indeed, the Stags out-shot Redlands 13-to-5 in the second half.
At the start of the period, Abdi made a heel pass to Crowley in the box who let a hard shot sail high. Despite missing that shot, the opportunity fueled CMS. Four minutes later, Redlands committed a foul down the right sideline and Lichtenberg took the free kick for CMS. The lanky Burke got a head on it in the 55th minute for the Stags' lone goal of the night.
The Bulldogs netted a pair more goals in the 59th and 73rd minutes, converting on another one of ChubbFertal's long throws.
With the loss, CMS falls to 6-4 in SCIAC which is good for third place behind Redlands and La Verne. The Stags next travel across the street to Pomona-Pitzer (7-5, 6-4 SCIAC) on Oct. 10.
