2009 CMS Stags Tennis Season in Review
2009 marked another outstanding year for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags Tennis Program. CMS began it’s season at the new state-of-the-art Biszantz Family Tennis Center in January, going on to finish with it’s fourth consecutive top five national ranking. The Stags also won the SCIAC title for the fourth straight year, while extending their conference unbeaten streak to 41 matches.

Bates’ Ben Stein and Emory’s Michael Goodwin advanced to the final of the NCAA Division III Singles Championship at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday.

Santa Cruz Defeats Amherst to Win NCAA Team Championship
UC Santa Cruz won its seventh NCAA Division III team championship on Thursday, with a convincing 5-0 victory against 6th ranked Amherst. Once again, the Slugs established control of the dual by sweeping the doubles, meaning that for the team tournament Santa Cruz did not lose a doubles pro-set in any match.

Amherst and Cruz Pull Off Upsets to Reach Team Final
In two intense semifinal matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Wednesday, Amherst College and UC Santa Cruz earned upset victories and will face each other for the Division III Men’s Team Championship. Amherst College earned its second upset in as many days with a gritty 5-2 win over #1 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis on Wednesday. The Slugs swept the doubles and then held on for a 5-4 win over 2nd ranked Emory in the other semifinal.

Three of Top Four Teams Advance on Day One
Nationally ranked #1 Washington University St. Louis faced #9 ranked Gustavus Adolphus in the first of four quarterfinal matches at the NCAA Division III Men’s team Championships on Tuesday. Wash U took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, winning at the #2 and #3 positions. Singles play between the teams pitted nationally ranked #1, and undefeated, John Kauss of Gustavus against #3 ranked John Watts of Wash U. The match was not completed, however, after Wash. U. took three of five singles matches to clinch the victory and take one step closer to defending their national team title.

CMS Hosts NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, May 19-24
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps hosts the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships in Claremont from Tuesday, May 19th through Sunday, May 24th at the new Biszantz Family Tennis Center at CMC.

Stags Advance to NCAA West Region Final
CMS Men’s Tennis advanced to the third round of the NCAA Team Championship with a 5-0 win over Redlands on Friday. Senior Captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) won at #1 singles and #1 doubles to lead the Stags to their third win over Redlands this season. CMS will now play top seed UC Santa Cruz for the opportunity to return to Claremont and the Biszantz Family Tennis Center for the final three rounds ot the team championship.

Stags Stopped at #4 UC Santa Cruz
CMS Stags Tennis traveled to UC Santa Cruz to take on the fourth ranked Slugs in the final regular season dual match of the season. Senior captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) earned two wins for the Stags at #1 singles and #1 doubles, but it wasn’t enough to stop a determined Slugs team on their home courts.

Larry Wang (SR, Orange) became the first Stag to win the Ojai Valley Division III Singles Title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over number one seed John Watts (Washington Univ. [St. L]) on Sunday afternoon.

Wang Named SCIAC Athlete Of The Week
Lawrence Wang (Sr. - Orange, CA) was selected SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the week of April 13-19. He won both of his singles and doubles matches at the SCIAC Championships to lead the Stags to their fourth straight title.

Men’s Tennis Wins 4th Straight Conference Title
CMS Stags Tennis won it’s 4th straight outright conference title, capturing the SCIAC tournament title by defeating Redlands 8-1 on Saturday. Senior captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) led the Stags with two more convincing wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles, and earned SCIAC Player of the Year honors for an unprecedented third consecutive year.

Stags Advance to SCIAC Tourney Final
CMS Men’s Tennis defeated Caltech 5-0 and Pomona-Pitzer 8-1, advancing to the final of the SCIAC tournament. Senior Russell Chidester (Austin, TX [pictured right]) won at #2 doubles and #5 singles to pace the Stags in the first of their two dual matches on Friday. Chidester was one of five Stags to get wins in both singles and doubles. The Stags will face Redlands in the final on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Redlands East Valley High School.

Men’s Tennis Heads To Conference Tourney As Top Seed
CMS Men’s Tennis defeated Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 on Saturday night, clinching its fourth straight undefeated regular season conference title, and making them top seed in the SCIAC tournament next weekend at Redlands. The Stags were led against the Sagehens by junior Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI [pictured right]), who won at #1 doubles and #3 singles.

CMS Men’s Tennis pulled off another improbable victory on Sunday, overcoming a 4-0 deficit to defeat Division I opponent UC Davis 5-4. Sophomore Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured right]), clinched the team’s and his second win against a Division I opponent this season with a singles victory at #6.

Men’s Tennis Splits With Williams and Occidental
CMS Men’s Tennis played its second thrilling dual match against a top five team in as many days, falling to #5 Williams 5-4 on Saturday. The Stags then rallied in the afternoon to defeat Occidental 9-0 and remain unbeaten in SCIAC. Junior Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI [pictured right]) was one of four Stags to earn singles wins against Williams, as CMS overcame a 3-0 deficit.

Stags Battle To Get 5-4 Win Over #4 Middlebury
CMS Men’s Tennis won its fifth straight non-conference match and third straight against nationally ranked opponents, with an exciting 5-4 win over 4th ranked Middlebury on Friday. Junior Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]) won at #5 singles and #3 doubles to lead the Stags.

Men’s Tennis Wins Stag-Hen Invitational
CMS Men’s Tennis won the Stag-Hen Invitational, defeating Colorado College 9-0 on Friday, and then 16th ranked Trinity College 8-1 in the semifinals, and 6th ranked Amherst 7-2 in championship, both played on Saturday. It was the Stags’ second title in the tournament’s three-year history. Seven Stags won each of their singles matches on the weekend.

Stags Split Doubleheader - Extend SCIAC Win Streak
Freshman Victor Chien (Fr. – Diamond Bar, CA [pictured right]) won his fifth straight at #6 singles, as the Stags dropped a close 5-4 match to #1 Emory on Friday morning. CMS rebounded in afternoon conference play, defeating La Verne 9-0 to extend its SCIAC consecutive win streak to a program best 35th straight.

Men’s Tennis Falls To Penn 4-3
Freshman Robbie Erani (New York, NY [pictured right]) won his team-leading 12th match of the season with a dramatic 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win at #2 singles, bringing the Stags back from a 3-0 deficit against Penn on Thursday. Erani’s win tied the match at 3-all overall, but the Stags couldn’t complete the comeback, losing a three-setter at #3 singles in the decisive match.

Doubles Spur Stags to Two More Wins
CMS Men’s Tennis completed a weekend sweep of nationally ranked Divison III opponents with 6-3 and 8-1 wins over #8 Kenyon and #21 UT-Tyler on Saturday. The Stags' #1 doubles team Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) and Guillaume Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) [pictured right] led the charge that saw CMS win all nine doubles pro-sets in the three dual matches.

CMS Men’s Tennis defeated #12 Mary Washington 8-1 in a rain delayed dual match Friday, with senior captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) winning decisively at #1 singles and doubles. Junior Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]) was also a two-time winner on the afternoon, earning victories at #5 singles and #3 doubles.

Men’s Tennis Comes Back to Beat ‘Nova 5-4
CMS rallied from 3-0 and 4-2 down in matches to defeat Villanova University on Monday for the Stags second straight 5-4 victory. After a disappointing showing in the doubles where the Stags were swept for the first time this season, the team found its rhythm in the singles and won at five of the six positions to secure the victory. Sophomore Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured right]) won the deciding match at the fifth singles position, hanging on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Men's Tennis Captures 3rd at National Team Indoors
CMS Men's Tennis won the third place match at the ITA National Team Indoors in St. Peter, MN on Sunday, with a 5-4 victory over fifth-seeded Kenyon College. The Stags were led by sophomore Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) and freshman Robbie Erani (New York, NY) who both had wins in singles and doubles.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The third seeded CMS Men’s Tennis team lost a 6-3 semifinal decision to second seeded Emory in the ITA National Team Indoors on Saturday. Freshman Robbie Erani (New York, NY [pictured right]) accounted for two of the Stags three points, winning at #3 doubles and #3 singles.

CMS Stags Tennis won their season opening dual matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 7-2 and Chapman 9-0. CMS did not drop a set in twelve singles matches on the day. Freshman Victor Chien (Diamond Bar, CA - pictured right) won at #3 singles and #3 doubles against Chapman.

Stags Tune Up Against Alums
The 34th annual Ducey Cup Alumni Match was held on Saturday, January 31, with Stags Tennis players past and present celebrating the dedication of the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. In the morning session, the Stags defeated the Alums 12-6 in a series of one-set doubles matches. Later in the afternoon, the Stags returned to take on a group of Alums who have graduated since 2004, with the Alums prevailing 7-6 in a series of five doubles and eight singles pro-sets.

CMS Men’s Tennis begins its 2009 campaign with great anticipation, ready to play at their new home - the Biszantz Family Tennis Center - as the third ranked team in Division III and three-time defending SCIAC champions. CMS and the tennis center will also serve as hosts and host site of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Team and Individual Tennis Championships, May 19-24.

Newest Stags Impressive at ITA Regionals
Led by singles semifinalist Robbie Erani (FR - New York, NY[pictured right]), four freshmen made impressive debuts at the ITA West Regionals. Erani, Victor Chien (FR - Diamond Bar, CA), Ari Zyskind (FR - Concord, MA) and Brandon Wei (FR - Portland, OR) combined for fifteen wins against six losses in a tournament featuring many of the top Division III players in the west.
