Stags Defeat #2 Amherst 6-3

Senior Captain Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured right]) led CMS Men's Tennis to a 6-3 win over second ranked Amherst, winning at #1 doubles and #5 singles. Wu's straight set win gave CMS it's fourth point of the dual match, and extended his unbeaten streak to nine singles matches thus far this spring.

Wu and partner Zhenya Pereverzin (Fr. - Clackamas, OR) won the decisive doubles match at #1 to give the Stags a 2-1 advantage heading into singles. CMS used that momentum to take five of six first sets in the singles, the most dramatic being Pereverzin's 9-7 tie-break win after saving two set points at #6 singles. After Amherst had won at #2 singles to even the match at two matches all, Stags' #1 Alex Lane posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over 25th ranked Luis Rattenhuber to give CMS the 3-2 advantage. Wu's victory at #5 put the Stags within one match of clinching, with Pereverzin, Russell Brockett (Sr. - Austin, TX) and Mac Cahill (So. - Southport, CT) all up a set at #3, #4, and #6 respectively.

Pereverzin went up a break at 4-3 in the second before dropping two games. Down 4-5, he held and then broke to serve for the match. At 6-5 he was broken again, forcing a tie-breaker. Down 0-3 and then 2-4 in the tie-break, he won four straight to give he and his team two match points at 6-4. Amherst's Justin Reindel fought off two match points to even the tie-break at 6-all, but Pereverzin's backhand winner at 6-all and penetrating forehand approach shot on his third match point were enough to clinch the win for CMS.

Up 5-2 in matches, Cahill lost a tough second set and then a 10-8 match tie-break. Brockett held one match point in the second set tie-break before dropping the second set and then winning an 11-9 match tie-break.

Following the Stags' dramatic 6-3 win over Amherst, CMS took on regional opponent Lewis and Clark College. The Stags' 9-0 victory was their 13th of the season. Next up for CMS is a trip to Austin and San Antonio, Texas, where the Stags will take on #11 Trinity on Friday, #6 UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, and #5 Washington University St. Louis on Sunday.
