Junior Alex Lane (Claremont, CA [pictured left]) defeated teammate Alex Johnson (SO - Thousand Oaks, CA [pictured right]) to win the USTA / ITA Division III West Regionals at CMS on Sunday. CMS had six singles players reach the quarterfinals, and three reach the semis, in addition to the all-CMS final. Lane also reached the doubles final with partner Warren Wood (FR - Del Mar, CA), as CMS had three doubles pairs in the quarters, and two of the four semifinalists.
As top seed in the singles and highest ranked returning player in the field, Lane came in as one of the favorites to win the title. However, he needed four hours and fifteen minutes to defeat freshman teammate Cameron Bernhardt (San Diego, CA) in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Bernhardt had one match point late in the second set, before Lane rallied to win in three tie-break sets. Then on Sunday morning, a mere twelve hours after finishing his last of four matches the previous night, Lane defeated defending champion Nick Ballou from Cal Lutheran in three sets in the semis before taking on Johnson - who was appearing in his second straight West Regional final - for the championship.
CMS took control of the tournament early and showed the strength of their new and veteran players alike. The Stag freshmen Wood, Bernhardt, and Nikolas Marino (San Diego, CA) all advanced to the latter stages of the tournament, with Bernhardt and Marino taking out two seeds each en route to the quarters. Wood, as the 5th seed, needed three sets to defeat junior teammate Mac Cahill (Southport, CT) in the quarters, before narrowly losing to Johnson in the semis. Bernhardt and Marino, pairing up for the first time, also reached the semis of the doubles.
With the title, Lane earns singles ITA All-American honors and a berth in the USTA / ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Alabama Oct 13-16, in a field featuring the top eight national qualifiers in Division III.
