Men's Tennis Earns Year End Accolades
CMS Stags Tennis earned a year end national ranking of #6, marking the seventh straight year that the program has finished in the top 10. By reaching the NCAA team quarterfinals for the third year in a row, CMS has asserted itself as one of the premiere tennis programs in Division III. In addition to this season's #6 ranking, the Stags have finished #5 three times, #4 once, and #3 twice in the last seven years. Five SCIAC teams - CMS (#6), Pomona-Pitzer (#11), Cal Lutheran (#12), Redlands (#17), and Whittier (#26) - earned national rankings.
Freshman Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and junior Alex Lane (Claremont, CA) earned ITA All-American honors in singles for 2012. Wood had earlier been named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, while Lane had won the ITA / USTA West Region Singles Championships in the fall. Lane earned a final national singles ranking of #13, while Wood was #15. Senior captain Robbie Erani (New York, NY) earned a national singles ranking of #46.
Three CMS student-athletes were also recognized for their excellence in the classroom. Senior captain William "Max" Mullen (Westport, CT), senior Andrew Duckworth (Lake Forest, IL), and junior Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) all attained a cumulative 2011-2012 GPA of 3.5 or better to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
CMS was also recognized for having the 10th best 2012 recruiting class in Division III according to TennisRecruiting.net. Next year's incoming freshmen will include Lestter Yeh (Temple City, CA), Travis Tu (Arcadia, CA), Skyler Butts (Irvine, CA), Oliver Seifert (Austin, TX), and Bryan Mehall (Snowmass, CO). CMS had the top ranked recruiting class for 2011.
