CMS 5, Redlands 0
The top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Redlands in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. CMS advances to play second-seeded Cal Lutheran on Sunday at noon in the Regional Championship match. CMS and Cal Lu have faced each other twice this season, with CMS winning 6-3 both times, most recently in the finals of the SCIAC Championships.
CMS jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play as the No. 1 doubles team of Joe Dorn and Warren Wood, No. 2 doubles team of Skyler Butts and Neel Kotrappa and No. 3 doubles team of Nikolas Marino and Alex Lane all got wins. Marino and Lane won 8-4 over Max Licona and Teddy Jones and was the first doubles match to be completed. Butts and Kotrappa followed with an 8-5 win over Nick Cummins and Connor Hyde. Dorn and Wood then closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win over Gram Leahy and Patrick Lipscomb to give CMS the 3-0 lead.
In No. 6 singles, Alex Johnson defeated Leahy 6-2, 6-0. Butts gave CMS the 5-0 win with a 6-3, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles.
CLU 5, UC Santa Cruz 2
Down 2-1 after doubles play, the second-seeded California Lutheran men's tennis team came back to get a 5-2 win over UC Santa Cruz in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. With the win, Cal Lutheran advances to play top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday at noon in the Regional Championship match. CMS and Cal Lu have faced each other twice this season, with CMS winning 6-3 both times, most recently in the finals of the SCIAC Championships.
In doubles, Santa Cruz got out to a 2-1 lead, despite losing the
first point in No. 1 singles 8-1. In No. 1 doubles, Nicholas Ballou
and Ray Worley won 8-1 and were the first doubles team to finish.
In No. 2 doubles, Santa Cruz evened the score at 1-1 as the team of
Chris Goetz and Andre Halabi defeated Alex Nichols and Connor
Treacy of Cal Lutheran 8-2. Max Littlejohn and Bryce Bettwy then
topped Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa 8-4 in No. 3 doubles to take
the 2-1 lead.
In singles, CLU took the top three singles matches as Ballou defeated Erich Koenig 6-3, 7-6 in No. 1 singles, Worley defeated Halabi 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 singles and Nichols defeated Bettwy 6-1, 6-4 in No. 3 singles. In No. 6 singles, Devon Belcher defeated Goetz 6-3, 6-2.
