The No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team defeated No. 5 Cal Lutheran 5-1 in the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. With the win, CMS advances to face Middlebury in the Division III Quarterfinals, May 20 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
With wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, CMS took a 2-1 lead into singles play. Nikolas Marino and Alex Lane were the first doubles team to finish with an 8-5 win over Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa to give CMS the early lead. Immediately after, the No. 2 doubles match finished, Skyler Butts and Neel Kotrappa came out on top with an 8-4 win over Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy of Cal Lutheran. In No. 1 doubles, Nicholas Ballou and Raymond Worley of CLU defeated Warren Wood and Joe Dorn of CMS 8-5 for a point which narrowed the CMS lead to 2-1.
In singles, Marino, Butts and Lane all got wins for CMS. In No. 3 singles, Marino defeated Nichols 6-0, 6-0. Butts followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Millet in No. 5 singles and then Lane closed out the win for CMS with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Treacy in No. 4 singles.
Cal Lutheran ends the season at 19-5 overall while CMS moves to 28-3.
