PASADENA, Calif. – For winning the USTA/ITA West Region singles title over the weekend, sophomore Skyler Butts has been selected as the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week of September 23-29. He advances to the USTA / ITA National Small College Championships in Fort Myers, FL Oct 10-13, and earns ITA All-American honors by virtue of his win.
Butts secured the title with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over the #5 seed in the final. Butts, who was seeded eighth, also beat the #2 seed (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) in the semis. He won three of his first four matches in straight sets including wins over teammates who had beaten the #3 and #9 seeds. He will represent the West as one of eight regional winners in the National Small College Championships in Fort Myers. Each qualifier will play out to place, with the winner advancing to the Small College Super Bowl against the D2, Junior College, and NAIA national champions.
The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
