In his eleven seasons, Coach Settles has established the CMS
Stags Tennis program as one of the very elite in Division III
collegiate tennis. On the national level, CMS is coming off two
straight NCAA Division III Team Championship finals appearances and
has finished ranked in the top five in nine of eleven seasons under
Settles' leadership. The Stags have now won 85 consecutive
conference matches and nine consecutive outright conference titles,
both program bests. In 2013, in recognition of Coach Settles'
leading CMS to its first NCAA Championship match since 1994, the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association honored him as 2013 National
Coach of the Year, while the USPTA awarded him
Collegiate Coach of the Year for all divisions of college
Settles is a USPTA certified Elite Professional and a graduate of the USTA High Performance Coaching Program. In addition to coaching the Stags, Settles has coached Team USA in the International University Challenge - leading six top collegiate American players in an eight team international competition in France - and the Southern California Maze Cup Team (Boys and Girls 16s and 18s).
Settles has served as a volunteer member of two USTA national committees, the Collegiate and Adult & Senior Competition Comittees. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is co-chair of the ITA Small College Operating Committee and task force on NCAA Legislative Issues. In 2006, Settles was recognized for the first time as USPTA Collegiate Coach of the Year by the California division, and he has twice been honored as West Region ITA Coach of the Year.
Settles' outreach efforts in the Claremont community have yielded USTA / ITA Campus and Community Outreach awards in 2006 and 2011. He continues to coach USTA Junior Team Tennis teams and organize USTA Campus Showdowns each fall, while serving as Tournament Director for the USTA National Senior, Super Senior, and Ultra Senior Father-Son Hardcourt Championships in June. In 2013, Settles and wife Kathy launched the Tennis in Our Schools initiative, bringing tennis to each of Claremont's seven elementary schools in the form of physical education and after school programming.
Before coming to CMS, Settles served as Director of Player Services of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the governing body of men’s professional tennis. At the ATP, Settles’ wide range of responsibilities included supervision of the Player Services Department, staff liaison for the ATP Player Council, Player Leadership Committee, and Board of Directors; and serving as founding committee member of the ATP Medical Services Committee. From 2004-2012, Settles served on the Player Services staff for the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, an ATP World Tour event.
Still an active player himself in the adult and family divisions, Settles is winner of 14 USTA National Championships. Paul, and wife Kathy have four children: Ryley, Christian, James, and Caleb.
