CLAREMONT, Calif. – A handful of members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field team competed on Saturday at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University. The field was comprised of post-collegiate athletes and Division I powerhouse schools like USC, Air Force, Brigham Young, UNLV, Wisconsin, and San Diego State.
Senior Vaiva Palunas (SC) had an outstanding showing on the throws, taking third place in the hammer (second amongst collegians) with a distance of 55.19 m (181-01). She also finished ninth among collegians in the discus, recording a seasonal best 46.57m (152-09). Her score currently leads all NCAA Div. III participants. Junior Emily Bassett (CMC) took fourth in the hammer with a score of 51.20 (168-00) and set a PR in the shotput at 12.39 m (40-07.50) to finish ninth. Her score on the shotput moved her to third on the CMS All-Time Performers list.
Junior Tyra Abraham (SC) had the best performance amongst the Athenas, taking 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.98. With that time, she sits on the top in the NCAA Div. III in this event. Abraham also finished fifth best time of the season on the 200 in the Div. III.
In the triple jump, senior Cam Van (CMC) recorded a seasonal best 14.20 m (46-07.25) to finish fifth (fourth collegian) at the event. His mark leads the SCIAC for the 2017 season. He also recorded 6.45 m in the long jump to take ninth place. Sophomore Corbin Bethurem (CMC) finished 18th overall in the 100 with a time of 11.095 and finished the 200 in 14th with a time of 22.58.
The Stags and Athenas compete next Saturday, April 1 in their second SCIAC Multi-dual meet against La Verne and Caltech at the University of Redlands, beginning at 10 a.m.
