CLAREMONT, Calif. – The hard-fought match against the cross street rival didn't go in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team's favor, as the Stags (13-15, 5-2) took a tough 13-8 loss to No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer (19-8, 7-0) on Wednesday night. With this victory, the Sagehens clinched the SCIAC Championship while the Stags sit in third behind Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier.  Senior Ellison Taylor (CMC) recorded a season-high four goals against the Sagehens, complimented with a steal, while junior Noah Deer (CMC) led the team with two steals and a goal. Pomona-Pitzer saw three swimmers score a hat-trick, including Adam Ward, Mark Hallman, and James Baker, and their goalie Daniel Diemer saved five shots and had five steals.

The Sagehens got off to a hot-start in the opening period, going on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Down 6-2, the Stags responded with urgency by tightening up on the defensive end. CMS managed to make several key stops while junior Graham Fullerton (CMC) crashed the post to convert a brilliant touch shot during a 4-1 run to keep the game within one point.

However, in spite of the swift ball movement on the offensive end, the Stags struggled to find the game-tying shot, and the Sagehens slowly broke their scoring drought to pull the game away. Following two goals from Pomona-Pitzer, Deer stepped up with a power play goal to stop the run. However, it was not enough to hold off the Sagehens as the Stags were outscored 4-1 in the final period.

The Stags will host Cal Tech on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 am to close out the regular season and hold onto third place in the SCIAC before tournament play.
