The 2008 softball season is underway and the young, loaded team has started well. After a resounding sweep of Cal State East Bay in their home opener (10-3, 22-0), the Athenas split with seventh-ranked University of Redlands in their SCIAC opener (1-4, 6-5)
Both doubleheaders were well played and allowed every player on the roster to see action. In fact, after just four games, 15 of the 18 players have either gotten a hit or scored a run.
The balanced offensive attack has proved difficult for opponents to combat. CMS has outscored their opponents 39-12 and outhit them 41-29. A team batting average of .383, a slugging percentage of .589 and an on-base percentage of .480 keeps the free-swinging Athenas confident and excited when coming to the plate.
Leading the team in several categories is freshman phenom Gizelle Pera (Los Angeles [pictured]). The Marymount High product is batting .500 while reaching base at a .625 clip. Freshman Katerine Yale (Yorba Linda) is also hitting well and is tied with Pera with six runs scored while pounding out three triples and a double to lead the team with 12 total bases.
Junior Jessica Vaughn (Placerville) and freshman Melissa Munoz (Union City) round out the top of the order batting .455 and .364 respectively with Munoz leading all hitters with six RBI's.
As explosive as the Athenas are offensively, they are equally sound defensively. A team fielding percentage of .984 outpaces opponents (.922) and promises to improve as the young squad sees more game execution opportunities.
Sophomore Julia Cruz (Tustin) leads in the circle with an ERA of 1.66 and a 2-0 record. Juniors Stephanie McCarty (Huntington, NY) and Erika Weingart (Brea) will shore up the Athenas on the mound with McCarty holding an ERA of 2.84 at 1-1 while Weingart has only seen limited action to date.
The Athenas are on the road this Saturday taking on the University of La Verne. Game times are 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
