CLAREMONT, CA -- CMS (5-0, 2-0 SCIAC) opened the 2010 SCIAC schedule with a double-header sweep of Occidental College (1-3, 0-2 SCIAC) winning the first game 10-2 and the follow-up 3-2. Junior Michelle Harvey (San Diego [pictured, bottom]) led the offensive attack going 4-6 on the day while scoring 5 runs and 2 walks from her lead-off position. Harmony Palmer (FR, Oceanside) continued to produce with her stick going 4 for 8 with 3 runs and 5 RBIs on the day. Rebecca King (JR, Bellevue, WA) also had a fine day offensively and defensively despite being sick with a head cold. Her numbers were 2 for 5 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.
The Athenas defense continues to be rock solid as they committed only one error in the twin bill.
Rebecca Gularte (SO, Sunnyvale [pictured, top]) went the distance in Game 1 scattering 6 hits and giving up only 2 runs in 22 batters faced. Gularte returned for the final half inning in Game 2 and held the Tigers accounting for her first save of the 2010 season. She is currently sporting a 3-0 record with one save and an impressive 1.84 ERA. In Game 2, sophomore Emma Friedenberg (Danville) stepped in to pitch the first 5.1 innings where she held Occidental to 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 2 in 23 batters faced. Friedenberg is 2-0 on the season with a 2.62 ERA she is determined to improve.
The young squad is hitting and pitching extremely well for this early in the season and all indicators point towards continued development and success. They are committed to sharpening their clutch hitting skills as they stranded 17 runners in Saturday's contests. Playing an explosive and exciting brand of softball, fans of the team are sure to enjoy the ballgames at beautiful Athena field.
