Split with Cal Lu Gives Athenas Season Series
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played host to the Cal Lutheran Regals Friday, April 5, on Athena Field. The Athenas won game one, 6-1, but fell in game two, 2-0. CMS is now 20-10 overall and 12-6 in SCIAC play.
Game 1: CMS 6, Cal Lu 1
The Athenas' sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz came out throwing hard and hitting her spots early and often. The CMS defense behind her was very sharp and so were their bats. Senior infielder Harmony Palmer scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first off of a sacrifice from sophomore infielder Marie Bradvica to lead 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Athenas had runners on first and third with two outs when freshman outfielder Janelle Shiozaki stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch single through the left side of the infield which scored junior infielder Megan Latta who reached base earlier in the inning after drawing a walk. CMS scored one more in the inning to push its lead to 3-0.
CMS scored another run off the bat of Bradvica as Palmer scored after a double to lead off the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Palmer stepped in the box with two outs and the bases loaded and connected on a base hit up the middle that scored freshman infielder Mikayla O'Neal and Shiozaki. CMS pushed its lead to 6-0 and would hold on for the 6-1 win.
Schultz (15-3) pitched six strong innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts and no runs.
Palmer led the way for CMS going 2-for-3 with a single and a double and two RBI. Shiozaki went 2–for-3 with a pair of singles.

Game 2: Cal Lu 2, CMS 0
The Athenas had a tough go in game two of the doubleheader against Cal Lu. Although Regals' pitcher Shonna Christianson gave up nine hits to the strong bats of CMS, she got out of a couple situations behind her team's defense, especially in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Regals scored one run in the second inning which ended up being just enough. CMS had their chances when they had the bases loaded in the fourth inning, with only one out, but came up short with a ground out to end the inning.
The Athenas put pressure on the Regals once again in the bottom of the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with a single up the middle by junior infielder Michaela Ecklund but failed to score. Cal Lu scored an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning, stretching its lead to 2-0. CMS went down in order in the bottom half of the seventh inning ending as the Regals won 2-0
Athenas freshman pitcher Shannon O'Neill (5-4) threw a great game going 6 2/3 innings and gave up just two runs on five hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Latta went 2-for-3 with two singles and Palmer went 2-for-3 with a double and a single of her own.
CMS is back in action tomorrow, Saturday April 6, at the University of La Verne. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
