    The 2013-14 school year saw 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps teams win SCIAC championships and 12 teams make NCAA postseason appearances in their respective sport. Watch a few highlights from the record-breaking year for CMS Athletics.

    Over the years, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics has won 27 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Sports Trophies and has been ranked in the upper echelon of Division III programs in the annual Directors’ Cup Standings.

    As statistics were examined at the close of the season, single season hits, career wins, career shutouts and career innings pitched records were broken for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team.
  • CMS loses heartbreaker in NCAA Super Regional Championship

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team fought to the bitter end in the championship game of the NCAA West Region Super Regional. After losing the first game of the series on Friday, the Athenas’ faced elimination from the tournament on Saturday afternoon. CMS heroically won the first game of the day 6-4 to necessitate a third game and then, after leading that game until the seventh inning, gave up a three-run walk-off homer to end the game and season.
  • Athenas falter in eight inning epic vs. ETBU at NCAA Super Regional

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Softball team went ahead early in the first game of the best two-out-of-three series but then let ETBU back into the game ultimately giving the Tigers the opportunity to win it in the end 6-4. The Athenas, now down 0-1, need to win two games on Saturday to advance to the Division III World Series.

    After the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team’s first NCAA Regional Championship last weekend, the Athenas will travel to East Texas Baptist University for a best two out of three series.

    Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week after being named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Redlands Regional.
  • CMS advances to NCAA Super Regionals with 7-2 win over Redlands
    May 11, 2014
    In their ninth meeting of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team beat Redlands 7-2 for the program’s first NCAA Regional title. As the winner of a regional, CMS advances to a Super Regional with the winner of the Tyler Regional for a best two out of three match up. The initial field of 62 teams narrows to just 16 in Super Regionals.
  • Schultz & Robinson selected to NFCA All-Region Teams

    Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz and sophomore shortstop Tara Robinson were selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to the All-West Region Second Team. The 2014 NFCA Division III All-Region selections are comprised of three teams in each of the country’s eight NCAA regions totaling 360 student-athletes.

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas came out undefeated in the first day of the NCAA Redlands Regional. In the round robin games, No. 22 CMS beat No. 2 Linfield (2-1) and conference foe No. 25 Redlands (8-5).

    After earning the automatic qualification to the 2014 Division III Softball Championship by winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team faces Linfield and Redlands in a three team regional hosted by Redlands May 9-10.
  • CMS captures third consecutive SCIAC Tournament Championship

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team won their third consecutive SCIAC Tournament title beating Redlands 11-0 on Saturday afternoon at Redlands’ “Field of Dreams.” The Athenas entered the second day of the tournament as the only undefeated team after having won both games on Friday against Chapman (6-0) and Redlands (5-4). In the championship game, CMS faced Redlands again as the Bulldogs beat Whittier earlier in the day. Redlands won the first match up with CMS 1-0 to push the tournament to the “if necessary” championship game where the Athenas came out on top to be crowned SCIAC Tournament Champions.
  • Seven Athenas earn softball All-SCIAC honors

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball landed the most players on the All-SCIAC teams including both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Sophomore shortstop Tara Robinson was named as the conference’s Player of the Year as freshman Kaylilani Minami earned the Rookie of the Year award. First Team honors went to junior pitcher Hayley Schultz and sophomore first baseman Katie Savard. Sophomore outfielder Janelle Shiozaki, sophomore second baseman Brooklyn Robinson, and senior catcher Morgan Beltz earned Second Team honors.
  • Undefeated after first day, Athenas advance to SCIAC Tournament championship game

    After the first day of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament hosted by Redlands University, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas remain the only undefeated team. In their first game, No. 2 seed CMS beat No. 3 seed Chapman 6-0. CMS then met No. 1 seed Redlands in the winner-winner matchup and came back for a 5-4 walk-off win.
  • Softball SCIAC Tournament Information

    The top four teams after regular season play compete in the SCIAC Tournament May 2 and 3. Redlands (27-11, 23-5) won the regular season and hosts the double elimination tournament for No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-12, 20-8), No. 3 Chapman (24-16, 17-11), and No. 4 Whittier (26-14, 16-12).
  • Grand slam and 11 doubles for sweep of Oxy

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball beat Occidental College 17-2 and 14-2 in the final regular season games of the season. The Athenas’ offense broke out with 37 hits to score 31 runs during the two games. Sophomore Tara Robinson led the team going 7-for-8 at the plate including a triple while freshman Andrea Jewett earned her first win on the season.
  • CMS sweeps Cal Lu, splits with Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Day

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was 3-1 over the weekend sweeping Cal Lutheran (9-1, 10-7) and then splitting with Pomona-Pitzer (2-1 loss, 8-0 win) on Senior Day. Seniors Morgan Beltz, Hannah Dunham and Megan Latta were recognized as this year’s graduating class before the games against Pomona-Pitzer.

  • Heydenberk and Shiozaki ignite Athenas’ offense for two shutouts over Whittier

    After tough losses the day before, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team rebounded to beat Whittier twice in a Sunday make-up double header. Freshmen Alexa Heydenberk and Cassie Davis were big contributors to the Athenas’ win in the second game while sophomore Janelle Shiozaki doubled to knock in the only CMS score in the first.

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team lost two one-run games in Saturday’s double header against conference rival and NFCA ranked No. 19 Redlands (1-0, 4-3).

    Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz on the CMS softball team was 4-0 during the week beating No. 4 Central College (IA) twice, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Occidental. She only gave up one earned run in 26 innings pitched earning her the CMS Athlete of the week for March 17-23, 2014

    Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team tallied four wins during the week and for her efforts, has been named the NFCA Pitcher of the Week and the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week of March 17-23.
  • Triples lead to Athenas taking two from Occidental

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball beat Occidental College 9-0 and 15-0 (both in 5 innings) in its first SCIAC games since a successful spring break trip to Tucson. Three different Athenas tripled during the double header while the entire pitching staff contributed to two shutout victories.
  • Impressive offensive and defensive performances earn CMS five wins in Tucson

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went 5-1 during their three day stay at the Tucson Invitational Games facing teams from Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Athenas beat Augsburg 10-2 (5 innings), Wisconsin Eau Claire 7-4, Marian 9-0 and most notably No. 4 Central College (IA) twice (2-1, 7-0) while dropping a game to Wisconsin La Crosse 6-1. The relentless offensive fire power combined with stellar pitching performances that were backed up with rock solid defense earned the Athenas five hard fought wins.
  • Athenas win game one but end up with split against La Verne

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went 1-1 against La Verne in Saturday’s home conference double header, winning the first game 2-0 but then falling 5-1 in the second. The Athenas look to improve on their SCIAC record (3-3) with double headers on Friday and Saturday this week against Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer.
  • A pair of walk-offs over Chapman give Athenas first wins

    In Saturday’s SCIAC home opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team captured their first victories of the season in two nail-biting 1-0 games against Chapman. Junior Hayley Schultz and freshman Kaylilani Minami each shut out Chapman in spectacular pitching performances while sophomore Carlene Roberts was the offense's spark plug.
  • Extra inning game goes to Vanguard in season-opener for Athenas

    The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team opened its 2014 season on Saturday at Athena Field with a 3-2, 10-inning loss to Vanguard. Due to extra innings in the first game of the scheduled doubleheader, the second game got called because of darkness with less than five innings complete.
