CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team lost two one-run games in Saturday's double header against conference rival and NFCA ranked No. 19 Redlands (1-0, 4-3).
In the first game, it became obvious that defense was going to make the difference after the first three scoreless innings. It remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Redlands was able to capitalize on a costly CMS error and finally put a run on the board. The run was knocked in by Tori Santos of the Bulldogs.
CMS was unable to answer back in the bottom of the seventh despite sophomore Katie Savard hitting a lead off single.
Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz held Redlands hitless through five innings and ultimately only gave up three hits. She struck out five and had just one walk in the game.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start in the second game and scored two runs in the first inning highlighted by a triple off the bat of Amanda Lievanos. CMS punched back in the bottom of the first when Savard hit in freshman Alexa Heydenberk.
The Athenas scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth to tie up the game at three runs apiece. A deep sacrifice fly by sophomore Carlene Roberts plated sophomore Tara Robinson who had singled to get on and then stolen second and third bases. Then, sophomore Janelle Shiozaki's speed forced a throwing error that scored sophomore Brooklyn Robinson.
Redlands scored again to break the tie in the top of the sixth inning but this time the Athenas could not rally to answer. The game ended with a final score of 4-3 giving the Bulldogs their 14th straight win.
CMS is now 14-9 overall and 9-5 in conference. The Athenas play Sunday, March 30 against the Whittier Poets in a make-up game from a previous rain-out. The double header will take place at 12 and 2 pm.
