CMS Dominates Pomona-Pitzer In Season Opener
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team started
out their season with a bang winning their first game against
cross-campus rival Pomona Pitzer 24-6 on Parents Field. The
team lost five starting seniors from last season, but the
underclassmen stepped up to fill the void. Eleven different
players scored during the game with most goals resulting from
assists.
Pomona-Pitzer came out strong scoring the first goal, but was
unable to maintain the lead for long. Courtney Cronin (SR, Madison
CT) started a CMS scoring streak that would include fourteen goals
before halftime. Sophomore Sarah Dick (Beverly, MA) was the leading
scorer of the game with nine goals having five in the first half
alone. Molly Murtaugh (SO, Wilton CT) dominated the midfield
shutting down Pomona-Pitzer’s midfield transition and
securing multiple draw controls and helping to keep the ball in
CMS’ sticks. The Sagehens fought hard defensively and
finished the game with intensity, but CMS’ depth of talent
made them hard to defend as every player was a threat to
attack.
This was a solid win for the Athenas. The CMS team seems ready for
their competitive season and with their depth it will be hard for
teams to prepare for them.
