Athenas Defeat Poets In Overtime For First SCIAC Win
The women's basketball team made 14 of 18 free throws in the overtime period to win at Whittier 65-59 on Thursday night. The Athenas battled back from an early 10 point deficit and then the teams traded leads throughout a game which featured nine ties. CMS is now 1-2 in SCIAC play while Whittier falls to 2-1.
After falling behind by 10, CMS went on a 13-2 run to take their first lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. The teams traded leads eight times with the Athenas holding a one point advantage at the half.
Whittier only led twice in the second half (by one point each time), but had the advantage with less than two minutes remaining. Sarah Beattie (FR, Quechee, VT) hit a free throw to tie the game, but the teams combined to miss four shots in the last 75 seconds.
The game was still tied halfway through the five-minute overtime when the Athenas went on a 7-0 run and never led by less than four the rest of the way. CMS made seven free throws in a row en route to a 14 for 18 performance in the overtime including eight of 10 by Casey Reck (FR, Santa Barbara).
Camille Sheffield (SO, Gambier, OH [pictured]) led a quartet of Athenas scoring in double figures with 15 points. Cori Williams (FR, Laguna Hills) added 14 points. Beattie had 11 points and eight rebounds and Jennifer Osgood (SO, Vashon, WA) had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Rosario Rios-Aguilar led the Poets with 25 points, including all 13 of the team's points in overtime, and 16 rebounds.
CMS returns to Ducey Gymnasium for a Saturday evening doubleheader against cross-street rival, Pomona-Pitzer. The women play at 5:00 with the men following at 7:30.
