Athenas Lose Close Game to First-Place Tigers in OT
Despite leading in shot attempts 71-49, the Athenas (3-7, 12-9) were not able to upset Occidental (9-1, 17-4) and lost the game in overtime 76-73.
The Athenas were able to keep up with the first-place Tigers throughout the game. In the opening four minutes, The Athenas led by six with two three-point baskets by Grace Beck (SO, Santa Cruz) and Aria Krumwiede (SO, Scottsdale, AZ). They were able to maintain a lead for about seven minutes, but did not trail by more than four points in the first half and ended the half trailing by one.
In the second half, both teams could not hold a lead greater than six points. The Athenas improved from their first-half offensive production by shooting 43% from the field and shooting a perfect eight for eight from the foul line. In closing seconds of regulation, two Tiger field goals gave the Tigers a two point advantage. But with 30 seconds left, the Athenas scored on a Taylon Johnson (SO, Prairie Village, KS [pictured]) jumper to force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Athenas were able to keep up with the Tigers, but perfect free-throw shooting from the Tigers and three for seven shooting from the Athenas were not enough to sustain the upset.
The Athenas had more rebounds (42-33), more steals (12-9), and forced more turnovers (19-18) than the Tigers. Although the Athenas had more shot attempts than the Tigers, the Athenas had a very difficult time converting those shots into points, shooting 36% the entire game. Four Athenas scored in double-figures: Cameron Hanson (SR, Rockville, MD) with 14, Camille Sheffield (SR, Gambier, OH) with 13, Sarah Beattie (JR, Quechee, VT) with 13 and Aria Krumwiede with 11.
Three games separate CMS from fourth-place Whittier. The Athenas will finish conference play with games against Cal Tech (Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 PM), at La Verne (Feb. 13), at Whittier (Feb. 18) and against Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 20).
