CLAREMONT, CA -- The Athenas' 65-51 victory over Pomona-Pitzer was more than just a win over a heated cross-street rival. The win on Saturday capped a four-game winning streak and an improbable comeback in the SCIAC standings to solidify a SCIAC tournament berth.
Early missed shots from the Athenas kept Pomona-Pitzer within striking distance, as CMS shot a dismal 27.6% from the field in the first half. With a 27-24 lead to start the second half the Athena defense kicked in, forcing 20 turnovers with 13 steals and six blocks for the game. The Athenas made the game even more out of reach for Pomona-Pitzer by scoring 41 points and shooting 50% in the second half. The Sagehens were held to only eight baskets in the second half.
Aria Krumwiede (SO, Scottsdale, AZ [pictured left]) scored a game-high 18 points and Taylon Johnson (SO, Prairie Village, KS [pictured right]) also contributed by scoring in double-figures (10). Cameron Hanson (SR, Rockville, MD [pictured center]) shined on senior night by scoring a double-double with ten points and 13 rebounds. The senior also had three blocks and three steals.
The #4 seeded Athenas will travel to play #1 Occidental on Thursday, Feb 25 at 7:30. The winner of the CMS/Occidental match-up will play either Cal Lutheran or Redlands.
