The CMS Athenas staged an impressive victory at Ducey Gymnasium Thursday night defeating the Cal Lutheran Regals 68-53. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improved to 16-5 overall and 6-4 (t3rd) in SCIAC. The win moved the team out of a three-way tie for fourth and into a two-way tie for third. Cal Lu fell to 11-10 and 5-5 in conference play.
The Regals took the early lead playing tight defense and quick in transition. But the Athenas, who won in the teams' last meeting at Cal Lutheran 59-47, tied the game at 8-8 midway through the first half. The Athenas defense kept the Regals offense in check allowing only 16 points the entire half. Offensively, CMS deftly handled the Regal double teams finding the open shot. Aria Krumwiede (JR, Scottsdale, AZ [pictured]) cashed in on two three pointers and nine points in the first half. She finished the game with 19 points on 50% shooting. Madeline Barnes (FR, Kenmore, WA) kept Cal Lutheran from second chance opportunities grabbing five defensive rebounds in the half. The Athenas headed to the locker room leading 32-16.
After halftime, the Regals came out with a full-court press. The slight change in tactics seemed to work as the Athena lead fell to eight with CMS leading 45-37. The Athenas eventually took advantage of the Regals pressure applied early in the plays to score on fast breaks and in transition adding to the lead. The Athenas shot 44.4% from the field while holding their opponents to a sub-par 34.6%. CMS also shot and defended well from the perimeter converting 6-15 from 3-Point range and allowing only one. CMS stayed on task late in the second half and continued to out-rebound the Regals led by Kalika Tullock (JR, Middleton, ID) who grabbed 10 boards. Jennifer Ringoen (San Mateo) stifled the Regals late in the game accruing 5 blocks.
The Athenas wrap up the rest of the season with four more conference games and host the University of La Verne Leopards Saturday, February 12 at Ducey Gymnasium with tip-off at 5:00. They take on Caltech February 19 at 5:00 in their regular season home-finale.
