Athena Summer Travel Blog: Sarah King
Hey Athena enthusiasts! I am Sarah King, a junior at Claremont McKenna College from San Francisco, CA. I am an Environment, Economics, and Policy/Pre-Med major on the Women's Basketball team. This past summer I spent most of my time abroad, traveling and learning. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in Italy, where I cheered on my dad in the World Master's Waterpolo Tournament. I also spent the month of July in Pune, India doing a medical program through Child and Family Health International. I finished my summer travels with a week in London during the Olympics. It was undoubtedly one of the best summers I have ever had.
My program in India was focused on maternal and child health. I shadowed different gynecologists and pediatricians in hospitals both in the city of Pune and in rural outside areas. I got to observe the Indian healthcare system from behind the scenes as I watched doctors perform various procedures and participated in some of the anti-natal care exams for village women. Between several weekend trips and the time spent with my host family, I got to truly experience Indian culture which is something I will never forget. It was amazing how friendly and accepting everyone I interacted with was; from the rickshaw drivers to doctors. I felt extremely safe and welcomed. My mom was also in India while I was there so I got to spend some time sightseeing with her too. The entire summer was more than I could ask for and India in particular was an unforgettable experience. But I am also very happy to be back in Claremont and so excited for the upcoming season! Go Athenas!
