Balanced Attack Helps CMS Top Chapman For First SCIAC Win
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Ahead for the majority of the game, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team had to fend off a late rally by Chapman University to pull out a 72-69 win on Thursday night at Ducey Gymnasium. The win improved the Athenas' record to 5-9 on the season and gave them their first SCIAC win while Chapman dropped to 11-4, 3-3 in conference.
A pair of free-throws by G Aria Krumwiede gave CMS its largest lead of the second half at 67-59 with 3:24 remaining. With 40 seconds remaining the Athenas held a six-point lead at 70-64, but Chapman got a five-point play when junior G Kimi Takaoka hit a three-pointer at the same time a CMS defender committed a foul off the ball. Senior G Emily McCoy put in a pair of free-throws for Chapman to narrow the CMS lead to 70-69 with 39 seconds left.
Chapman had an opportunity to get the win on its final possession but the CMS defense came up with a stop and then junior G Shelby Barthold made two free-throws to seal the win. Barthold had six points on the night and five Athenas finished in double-figure scoring for its most balanced effort of the season. Junior G Madeline Barnes had a game-high 22 points for CMS while junior G Kyra Ray, junior F Cameron Ruby, junior F Chloe Dobbert and Krumwiede all scored in double-digits as well.
Takaoka and freshman F Sandra Gao led the way for Chapman with 19 and 18 points, respectively. The duo is two of the SCIAC's top-three scorers.
CMS returns to play Saturday at Redlands with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
