Redlands Leads Throughout To Defeat Athenas 78-65
CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first match-up of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team lost on the road by one point to Redlands in overtime. The second time around Redlands led from start to finish as they defeated CMS 78-65 on Saturday night at Ducey Gymnasium in SCIAC play. With the loss, CMS dropped to 8-16, 4-11 in SCIAC while Redlands improved to 19-6, 12-4 in SCIAC.
Guard Aria Krumwiede scored the first bucket of the game on the Athenas first possession at the 19:43 mark. Redlands then ran off seven-straight points highlighted by a three-pointer from Ashley Sevilla to take a 7-2 lead with 15:58 remaining in the first half and they would lead for the remainder of the game after that. Junior forward Sarah King answered Sevilla's three to narrow the score to 7-4 which as close as CMS would get the rest of the game.
Redlands maintained a comfortable lead throughout and led by as many as 19 points in the second half. CMS junior guard Madeline Barnes equaled her season high of 27 points as she connected on all 13 of her free-throw attempts to go along with five boards and five steals. Krumwiede added 19 points for the Athenas. Redlands had four players in double-figures led by Colleen Goeser and Marika Staton who each had 18 points.
The Athenas close out their season on Monday, Feb. 18 with a home game against Caltech at 7:30 p.m.
