CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team won their season and home opener against Bethesda University 64-63 on Friday night. The Athenas held the momentum for the majority of the game, but a second half surge by the Flames forced the game to come down to the final minute. Junior Kimberly Scamman made the game-winning layup for CMS with just under two seconds remaining.
The Athenas finished the first half leading 36-31 after hitting 41% from the field. Senior Madeline Barnes had eight points followed closely by senior Kyra Ray and freshman Kris Brackmann, each with five points.
Bethesda out-scored the Athenas in the second half but Scamman put up 11 by herself. In her first game back after missing last season due to injury, Scamman led the Athenas and finished the game with 15 points including being 5-7 from the field and draining all five free throws.
CMS is back on the court tomorrow, Saturday, November 16 at 5 pm vs. UC Merced.
