CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team won their second game of the season over UC Merced 67-64 in overtime. The Athenas came out on top of a game that had 16 lead changes to defeat the Bobcats.
After the first half, CMS led by just one point and it was clear the game was going to be close for the second half as well.
Senior Madeline Barnes scored 12 points for the Athenas in the second half and totaled a team high 20 on the night.
CMS was down by three points with two minutes left in the second half. UC Merced's lead was cut to two when Barnes made a free throw. Similar to the night before vs. Bethesda University, junior Kimberly Scamman made a last minute driving layup, this time to tie up the game at 60 points each and force an overtime period.
In overtime, the Athenas were 5-6 from the free throw line and tacked on two more with a layup by freshman Jai Dungca. With excellent rebounding the Athenas came away with the win 67-64.
CMS goes on the road to the Northwest to play Pacific Luthern on Thursday 11/21 at 7 pm and University of Puget Sound on 11/23 at 1 pm.
