TACOMA, Wash. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned a win and a loss over the weekend in the Northwest. The Athenas came back late in the second half to beat Pacific Lutheran University 72-68 on Thursday night to extend their win streak to three games. On Saturday, the Athenas fell to the University of Puget Sound 86-65.
CMS 72, Pacific Lutheran 68
The Athenas found a way to win against Pacific Lutheran of the Northwest Conference. After a tight, back and forth first half, the Athenas ended up needing to come back from an 11 point deficit to defeat the Lutes.
The Athenas went on a 19-6 run in the last 6 minutes that was kick started by a clutch three pointer from freshman Kris Brackmann. A pair of lay ups by freshman Claire Donnelly propelled CMS past the Lutes and free throws by senior Madeline Barnes and freshman Jai Dungca clinched the victory.
Barnes led the Athenas with 27 points including being 9-12 from the free throw line. Senior Kyra Ray made three-three pointers and Donnelley had a team high 11 rebounds.
With this win, CMS started off its season 3-0.
Puget Sound 86, CMS 65
On Saturday, the Athenas were not quite as aggressive against the Loggers and were unable to come out on top.
After a first half plagued by turnovers, CMS trailed 24-47. In the second half, the Athenas minimized their mistakes, picked up the intensity and outscored UPS 41-39.
Junior Kimberly Scamman had a game high 20 points and was perfect from the line, making all nine foul shots. Scamman also led the team in assists with four.
Barnes contributed 13 points and Brackmann came off the bench to tally eight of her own.
The Athenas are now 3-1 after the weekend and will next play in the Wells Classic after a small Thanksgiving break. They host Arizona Christian at 7 pm on Friday, November 29 in Ducey Gym and then play UC Santa Cruz at 5 pm on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer's Rains Gymnasium.
