SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team recorded the low team score on the second day of the SCIAC #1 Tournament to finish in second place. The first conference tournament of the spring was played at the par 71 Mountain Course at Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita.
After the first day, the Athenas sat in fourth place with a team score of 345. On Saturday, freshmen Margaret Loncki and Cara Brinster each shot 84, the low rounds for the team. Sophomore Taylor Kain-Godoy competed as an individual with an 83 on the first day.
Redlands shot an impressive 312 on Saturday with two golfers in the 70s. The Bulldogs held onto their lead on Sunday to win the tournament.
Frustrated with their scores after the first day, the Athenas posted the low team score on Sunday at 324. Despite the rain, CMS improved by 21 strokes between the first and second rounds and charged into second place. Head coach Jodie Burton was proud of the team for its determination and focus in the difficult conditions.
The largest improvements were seen in seniors Marissa Suehiro and Shaina Raskin who each bettered their first round scores by eight strokes. Sophomore Lindsay Slocum and freshman Maya Bhat rounded out the team for CMS.
The Athenas next compete in the Collegiate Invitational on Jekyll Island, GA Mar. 13-15. The final SCIAC tournament will be held at Upland Hills on Apr. 4-5.
